As various referees and opposing coaches have offered over the years, there is no better basketball environment on a Friday night in Ventura County than in Thacher's classic, old-school Voit Gymnasium. As such, the boys’ varsity program benefits from a committed school community that regularly brings great energy, excitement, and support to all home contests.
Each year, the varsity plays a demanding non-league schedule to prepare it for the tight competition that league play presents. Focusing on skillful execution, teamwork, sportsmanship, and the tenacity to overcome any challenge, students find success and growth on the court, win or lose. About those wins, though: Voit Gym holds memories of countless, thrilling victories, and Thacher’s boys' basketball history is filled with many league championships and California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoff berths. While the team's consecutive playoff streak was snapped recently at 16 years, the Toads once again advanced to the playoffs in 2024 and hope to start a new, lengthy streak.
About Coach Carney: Coach Carney has a long association with the sport of basketball and began leading Thacher's varsity in 2002. He treasures his time in Voit Gym and the opportunity to coach truly wonderful young men who give their heart and soul to the program. He is also grateful for the support the community provides the team. He has won league coach-of-the year many times, and is also a CIF Southern Section Coach of the Year recipient. When asked, Carney will say with a smile that he values the lifelong relationships he maintains with former players.
Notice of nondiscriminatory policy as to students: The Thacher School admits students of any race, color, national, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national, and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other School-administered programs.
