Thacher's campus has the kind of rugged, tough terrain and weather that makes for challenging cross-country training—and that develops successful distance runners. Our cross country team has another advantage: the School attracts students who already exhibit the mental toughness and willingness to push beyond their comfort zone that’s essential for the sport, whether they are serious runners or just getting started. The season kicks off with the Ojai Invitational Cross-Country Meet, featuring some of the top runners in Ventura, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara Counties and progresses with several other invitationals and league meets.
Boys’ cross country represents a Thacher athletics flagship program in that the team not only typically competes in the CIF Southern Section Championships, it also routinely advances to the State Championship Meet in Fresno where only the best of the best in California's massive Southern Section are invited. Furthermore, Thacher's boys' cross country team produces more NCAA athletes than any other program at the school.
About Coach DelVecchio: Coach DelVecchio has coached cross country and track at Thacher since the fall of 1996. A former high school and collegiate cross country and track athlete, Coach DelVecchio also ran competitively after college, placing third in the Newport Rhode Island marathon and fourth place at the Hood-to-Coast relay; she remains a life-long runner. Coach DelVecchio has taken countless Thacher teams to the cross country state championships in Fresno, including two that placed second in division 5. Additionally, Coach DelVecchio played a prominent role in coaching a track athlete who won the 2022 state championship in the 800, a first-ever for the Toads. Her goals for her teams include building resilience, competing at a high level, and instilling a love for running.
Fred teaches occasional xBlock electives, tutors in mathematics, and serves as head coach of both boys’ cross country as well as boys’ JV/third team soccer. In his 30+ years at Thacher, he has coached basketball, baseball, football, track, and 35 seasons of soccer—from third team to varsity, girls and boys. In 1988 he was named Ventura County’s boys’ cross country coach of the year, and in 1993 he was honored as CIF coach of the year for division six boys’ soccer. Fred played intercollegiate soccer at West Point and can often be spotted running the roads near the Thacher campus and around Ojai, where he lives with his dog, Tularosa (“Tule”).
