Rock Climbing

Thacher’s rugged 427-acre campus, combined with additional locations scattered around the temperate Ojai Valley, makes for an ideal backdrop to our rock climbing program.

Available as part of the Afternoon Program, rock climbing gives students the chance to build strength and skill, push themselves beyond what they thought they were capable of, and explore and appreciate unique natural landscapes.

Large boulders are scattered around campus, offering bouldering problems for climbers of every skill level. Larger rock formations give students the chance to take on longer climbs supported by ropes, and our indoor climbing wall is a great spot for students to practice belaying and learn about safe climbing techniques. The rock climbing program also incorporates tough cross-training into the afternoon regimen, helping climbers increase their stamina for challenging climbs.

The program also takes students on weekend trips to world-class climbing in places like Joshua Tree and Yosemite National Park, taking what they’ve learned on campus to the next level of challenge. Above all, our climbers are committed to supporting and encouraging one another every step of the way.

The Outdoor Program is really amazing. Living in the city, how could I have known I would love rock climbing? Being surrounded by all this incredible beauty actually makes you want to run and climb a 30-foot rock just because it seems invigorating.”
