• Lacrosse—Girls’ Varsity

    2024 - 2025

Nearly three decades ago, Thacher formed one of the first high school girls' lacrosse programs in the state of California. In the years since then, hundreds of Thacher girls have loved learning from our expert coaches while playing lacrosse on fields that overlook the picturesque Ojai Valley and frame perfect spring sunsets.

As lacrosse has grown in popularity in the state, Thacher’s program has led the way as the perennial frontrunner in the league, and as the winner of five consecutive state championships. Local athletic governance has taken the sport of lacrosse under its wing—first the Southern California Girls Lacrosse Association (Thacher has won the first two championships of the SCGLA in 2003 and 2004), and the spring of 2006 marked the beginning of lacrosse as an officially sanctioned sport by the California Interscholastic Federation’s Southern Section. As more and more CIF-SS schools add this great sport to their athletic programs, Thacher will also benefit from the increased local competition.

Of course, we will also continue to foster growth within Thacher’s program itself. Whether a girl has been playing lacrosse for years or she has never picked up a stick before, if she’d like to play here at Thacher, we have a place on a team for her. Beginners learn the rules and fundamentals of the sport, while more advanced players learn skills and intricacies that can help them if they’d like to play lacrosse at the college level. Through the years the lacrosse program has been equally rewarding for freshman just learning the sport, JV players who love improving and having fun, and varsity athletes who thrive on playing alongside and competing against the best players in California. At all levels, we focus on individual skills, team unity and fitness as means of achieving our goals.

Many Thacher lacrosse players over the years have gone on to play Division I and Division III lacrosse during their college careers at schools including Cal Berkeley, Bowdoin, Colby, Colorado, Columbia, Duke, Davidson, Occidental, and Stanford. When the girls on the team huddle up for their traditional cheer, "Orange. Green. Pride," they acknowledge that they are adopting the goals of the Thacher girls lacrosse program: playing hard, honoring the game, and always emphasizing the best sportsmanship possible.
