How did Thacher go from an Orange Ranch to a Prestigious Institution?

Sherman Day Thacher ventured to the Ojai Valley all the way back in 1887. Fully intent on becoming an Orange Farmer, he planted a crop of oranges and built a 3-room stone house called the Casa De Piedra (house of stone). Now, 138 years later, the Casa de Piedra ranch is home to one of the most unique and prestigious boarding schools in the United States. How did that happen?
