Many Americans flock to the country’s wilderness areas and preserves, hoping to experience the sublime and a moment of separation from society. However, a disproportionate number of these Americans are wealthy white people. What influences Americans’ perceptions of and access to wilderness, and how do those factors dictate who spends time in the backcountry?
