Narrative Medicine: Why Healthcare Needs the Humanities

Issues in our modern medical system often diminish the human aspects of the clinical encounter. My research investigates how an understanding of the humanities can improve the efficacy of patient treatment. First, I explore how story and metaphor are suffused in the gestures of the clinical world and create the milieu in which care and treatment are discussed Second, I join a growing community of literary and medical scholars in positing that attention to narrative is crucial for both clinicians and patients to fully comprehend the positions and perspectives relating to illness.
