Campus Water Conservation Efforts Earn Recognition
A 56 percent savings in usage yields a national award.
Sustainable living is an essential part of the Thacher ethos. This is reflected in our strategic plan, drafted in 2012, calling for improvements to our ability to monitor and manage the School’s consumption of important resources. In Southern California, there are few resources more important than water. So, in 2013 we began our water conservation project, which included numerous water-reduction strategies across campus. We soon realized that our efforts could benefit from the adoption of a total water management solution, and the partnership with Banyan was born.
In partnering with Banyan, Thacher leverages the full power of internet-of-things devices and Banyan Water Central—Banyan’s flagship software platform and a 2018 Environmental Leader Product of the Year winner—to better control water usage:
Monitor and detect leaks in real time.
Track indoor and outdoor water usage in real time or over designated periods.
Gain insight and visibility into water usage trends across campus through advanced data analysis.
Identify and correct excess water use to create new cost-efficiencies and achieve financial savings.
Between our own internal sustainability initiatives and our partnership with Banyan that deploys the latest innovations in IoT and software solutions, Thacher has achieved 56 percent water savings since 2013.
“We’re thrilled with the results we’ve achieved with Banyan’s smart water technology,” said Ed Bennett, head of facilities. “Not only have we been able to accelerate our water conservation efforts, but we’ve successfully integrated our students, faculty, and alumni into our ongoing sustainability plans by visualizing our water usage and savings through Banyan’s platform.”
The annual award program, now in its seventh year, recognizes the most innovative and successful commercial and industrial products and projects in the environment and energy space. Judged by an independent panel of industry experts, the winners are selected based on the success of the project, the capabilities of the product, and the positive effect on the industry. The winners were formally recognized and celebrated at the Environmental Leader & Energy Manager Conference on May 14, 2019.
“The Banyan team is honored to receive this award in partnership with Thacher,” said Gillan Taddune, CEO of Banyan Water. “Thacher’s commitment to responsible water use underscores Banyan’s mission to preserve Earth’s most precious resource. We’re proud to work with Thacher and other sustainability-minded properties across the country to provide the software necessary to conserve water at scale.”
