Going to Thacher is a 24-7 proposition (except for the occasional
weekend away at home or a friend’s), but Thacher students seem to
thrive in the totality of the experience. In fact, it’s impossible not
to be involved in more than just academics at Thacher, since the days
are full of so much more, some of it required, some voluntary. For
example, after classes wrap up for the day, everyone is out playing on
a team, or riding horses, or pursuing a specialized project. Then
everyone’s at dinner, and after that, attending a club meeting, special
speaker or extra help session. Then it’s on to evening study hours. But
well beyond what is required, students at Thacher are real players,
avid about how much there is to gain from being part of a club (or
launching one), working in one of the several ongoing community service
projects, joining a weekend cultural, camping or other outdoor
adventure. Most students aim toward and often arrive at a position of
leadership in those activities in which they become most ardently
involved—although by the time students are juniors and seniors, they
are expected to serve as active, positive leaders-by-example, with or
without a title.
